In 5th grade, the standard for fractions involves adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions, unlike denominators, using equivalent fractions as a strategy. Solving fractions in grade five involves employing visual models such as fraction tiles to represent the problems for students to conceptualize to solve math problems. Baking is a meaningful way for students to make real-world connections. It involves precise measurements involving fractional units, allowing students to see and manipulate fractions visually in a real-life context. The added benefit is they get to eat their delicious baked treats! The common theme at the end of 5th grade is that students share that the most memorable learning experience was learning fractions and making connections while cooking!
